Ian Kemp
I have been a member of SHAC since 2015. I graduated with an Advanced Diploma of Photography in 2017 with a specialisation in fine art, and I’ve been building a professional business since then with group exhibitions, competitions and my first solo exhibition at the start of 2020. A theme that runs through much of my work is that of the transience of human life. Nothing lasts forever, and that which exists undergoes constant change. I use landscapes, flowers and still life as metaphors for permanence and impermanence. I quite enjoy portrait photography and the challenge of capturing the essence of the person who is sitting for the image. I sometimes use the photogravure process in my work, whereby I convert digital images into intaglio etching plates and produce wonderful tonal prints using traditional printing techniques. It is a wonderful hands-on approach to my art. Since 2023, I have had solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Horsham Art Gallery, Ross Creek Gallery, St Arnaud Raillery Hub, Yering Station Gallery, Central Goldfields Gallery and in the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. In 2025, I was a finalist in the Flanagan Prize and the Martin Kantor Prize. Coming to photography later in life, I still have moments when I wonder how I got here at all, or that people will be moved by an image that I have created, or that they will commission me to take photographs. It’s wonderful, but it’s also strange. IG: @iankempphotography EM: [email protected] WEB: www.iankempphotography.com |
